The Chicago Park Board has passed an expansion to the city’s smoking ban that now includes city parks and harbors, with the move going into effect immediately. The vote came during Wednesday’s meetings, and builds on an existing ban on smoking at beaches, playgrounds and park buildings that has been in place since 2007.

Language in the new law spells out that any “lighted or vaporized substance in any manner or form” is now prohibited, which includes cigars, cigarettes, pipes, marijuana and electronic cigarettes.

Chicago police will be responsible for the enforcement, with fines ranging up to $500.

With the new ban, the five largest cities in the United States have all banned smoking in their parks; as Los Angeles and New York City passed similar measures in 2011, while Houston and Philadelphia passed measures this year. Boston also passed a park smoking ban at the end of 2013.

Chicago is home to approximately 2.715 million residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
