Bentley Tobacco says it will use artificial intelligence for an upcoming cigar project, but first, it wants to you ask lots of questions.
The German company and its U.S. subsidiary, led by Jonathan Carney, have launched The AI Cigar Project, which will eventually result in what the company says is “the first complete use of artificial intelligence (AI) to craft a premier, consumer-driven cigar experience, merging cutting-edge technology with the artistry of traditional cigar craftsmanship.” A new website with a 30+ question survey has been launched where people can provide feedback about what they look for in cigars, though approximately half of the questions seem to be focused on how consumers purchase cigars.
There are some questions that are directly related to how cigars are designed, ones related to shape, country of origin and smoking characteristics. Bentley says these responses will be submitted to an AI model that has already been developed:
All data collected will be analyzed by a sophisticated AI process developed by Carney and Bentley Tobacco, designed to process and interpret nuanced preferences. This AI will conceptualize the ideal blend, blending technology with the deep expertise of world-renowned tobacco producers. The result will be a cigar created through a harmonious balance of consumer insights and artisanal traditions.
For those hoping to get a cigar that was developed exclusively by AI, this release won’t be it.
“Once the survey and analysis phase are complete, master blenders will lead the creation of the cigar itself,” says the press release. “This fusion of AI-driven insights and master craftsmanship is set to redefine the cigar experience.”
Bentley says that the cigars produced as a result of this project will debut at the 2025 PCA Convention & Trade Show, which takes place April 12-14 in New Orleans.
“The AI Cigar Project is more than just a new product,” said Carney in a press release. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate the evolving tastes of cigar enthusiasts everywhere and an exciting leap forward for the industry. By uniting tradition and technology, we’re poised to craft something truly remarkable.”
Carney is also a co-founder of Shoulder of Giants, an AI-focused consulting firm.
