While the Cohiba Lancero that comes from Cuba is an iconic cigar, the Cohiba line made by General Cigar Co. that is sold in the United States has, until now, never had a lancero.

At the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show that kicked off Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center, General Cigar Co. unveiled the Cohiba Riviera Lancero, a 7 x 38 box-pressed lancero.

The Cohiba Riviera’s blend features a wrapper from Mexico’s San Andrés region, a Connecticut-seed binder grown in Honduras, and a filler that includes what General Cigar Co. refers to as proprietary Honduran Jamastran and Honduran La Entrada, as well as tobacco from Nicaragua’s Condega and Estelí regions. The cigars are made at STG Estelí in Nicaragua.

The Cohiba Riviera Lancero is priced at $14.99 cigar and offered in 15-count boxes priced at $224.85. It is scheduled to ship to retailers on May 1.

“The Lancero is a sophisticated vitola, and it was with great intention that we chose to debut this format under the Riviera line,” said Sean Williams, Cohiba’s brand ambassador, via a press release. “Cohiba Riviera embodies the brand’s style and substance in a way that is classically modern, and our resurgence of this classic size feels new and contemporary in its box-pressed format, especially under the Riviera umbrella.”

This becomes the fourth size for the Riviera line, which debuted in May 2023:

Overall Score

The Cohiba Riviera line is notable for being the first box-pressed line in the Cohiba portfolio. It is also unique in that it is produced in Nicaragua as opposed to General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, Dominican Republic, which generally produces the brand’s cigars, and that it does not use any Dominican tobacco in the blend, a hallmark of the non-Cuban Cohiba brand.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
