Wayne Township, N.J. has banned smoking at outdoor cafés, specifically the outdoor dining areas that have become increasingly popular since the start of the pandemic.

The Township Council passed a new ordinance that bans smoking and vaping of any kind, explicitly including the use of “cigarette, cigar, pipe, electronic vaping device, hookah and cannabis,” at outdoor cafés. The ordinance takes effect on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

Wayne has a population of around 50,000 people. It is located in Passaic County, less than 20 miles from Manhattan.
