While I cannot say that I have studied this definitively, I do not believe there’s another cigar line that has had as many different vitolas created as Arturo Fuente’s legendary Fuente Fuente OpusX. Part of this has to do with the longevity; while most lines are not around for a decade, OpusX will turn 30 next year. Part of this is the creativity of Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr. Part of this is related to the resources of Arturo Fuente; the company has an in-house CNC machine for the purpose of creating custom cigar molds.

But more than anything else, it’s because of how popular OpusX has always been.

A 6 x 56 toro extra size is a relatively common size these days, but in the more than 25 years that OpusX has been on the market, Arturo Fuente had not sold this size in the regular OpusX blend. Even more surprising is that Arturo Fuente doesn’t regularly offer OpusX in thicker vitolas like this. Of the 17 current regular production OpusX sizes, only two are thicker than 50 ring gauge.

The Undefeated was only available in samplers made for Cigar Rights of America (CRA), a trade organization of which Arturo Fuente is a member. These cigars, as well as the other nine cigars from nine other companies, were donated to the organization and sold to retailers to help raise money for CRA.

At 4 3/4 x 56, the OpusX Magnum O is probably the closest point of comparison on paper to The Undefeated. That said, the experiences are wildly different. With the extra length, The Undefeated offers a more restrained profile with a much lengthier sweet spot. While all of us were enamored by the flavor profile, two of our reviewers had issues with combustion. If not for that, this would have likely been in the Top 10, maybe even higher. — Charlie Minato.
