Over the past several years, Plasencia Cigars has been developing a collection of cigars with a naming convention that I find absolutely wonderful: the Cosecha series, named for the crops that the family has harvested in its long history in tobacco.
In November 2023, the company released the Cosecha 151, named for the 151st crop that the Plasencia family has harvested over its multiple generations in the tobacco business. More specifically, the tobacco for this cigar comes from Honduras and the 2016 harvest. When the line debuted at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, Nestor Andrés Plasencia said, “we wanted to give Honduras the respect it deserves in this industry.”
As I found in my review, the flavor is both distinct and clean without the dusty earth and roughness that appears in some lesser tobaccos from the country. One colleague noted that the “flavor profile was robust/rich, (and) loved that I could pair the roasted earthy flavor with some acidity and pepper from the retrohale or just have it combine with subtle sweetness without retrohaling.” Another said that “the persistent—but not overwhelming—spice combined with a distinct main clove flavor, nutmeg on the finish and floral sweetness on the retrohale,” was his favorite part, adding that it was “an amazing combination that was present throughout the entire cigar.”
I can’t remember how long it has been that I have been singing the praises of well-processed Honduran tobacco, but cigars like the Plasencia Cosecha 151 La Musica make me want to keep up the campaign. — Patrick Lagreid.
