In 2023, Davidoff announced the first cigar in the History Re-Rolled Series, a quartet of cigars that relied on the Swiss company’s rich history. The first three releases were all cigars that Davidoff had previously made but discontinued:

Admittedly, some details changed—the Signature No. 1 was a new name and the Aniversario No. 1 got an updated blend—but none of them were new concepts. For the fourth and final release in the series, Davidoff tried something new by combining two familiar names: Grand Cru + Diademas Finas.

However, it’s not as simple as taking the longstanding Grand Cru blend and making it in the company’s Diademas Finas vitola. Davidoff opted to use a Dominican San Vicente binder aged in barrels that previously held Bordeaux wine. The company says the binders were in the casks for six months, flipped every two weeks.

As far as the wine barrel flavor, mission accomplished. Two of our reviewers noted they found it. We also had two reviewers who thought the cigar needed to get through the taper before it really started to get going. Once it did, the cigar featured a lot of what you’d expect from Davidoff’s eponymous brand: complex and mature flavors and very good construction, all in a very approachable profile. This is the second year in a row that one of the History Re-Rolled cigars has finished in the top 10, an impressive bit of recent history. — Charlie Minato.
