If you’re wondering why you didn’t see this review posted this year, it’s because this is actually from a review all the way back in 2015.
That year at the Festival del Habano, boxes holding two of the Gran Reservas were given out to attendees. Patrick Lagreid reviewed it some months later, and it scored a 94, a score that only three other cigars achieved that year, with a single cigar scoring a 95. Much like the Montecristo 80 Aniversario which was also released that year and scored well in the review, it never arrived at retailers by the end of 2015, meaning it wasn’t eligible for the top 25. The following year it was nowhere to be seen, and towards the end of 2017 only one country reported having received it - still keeping it out of the top 25.
Finally, in 2018 it started to arrive at multiple retailers, allowing it to be purchased, rated by the remaining three staff and placing third in the 2018 top 25. Despite the frustration of waiting for this to come to market, it’s one of those things that was worth the wait. — Brian Burt.
