Three years ago, Davidoff launched a cigar line designed to take its fans on a trip to a specific region of the tobacco growing world. First it was Nicaragua, then it was Brazil, and this year it was to the company’s backyard of the Dominican Republic; more specifically to Yamasá, where Hendrik “Henke” Kelner figured out how to grow tobacco in a place thought to be too unfriendly to make it happen.
This is a cigar that was born out of a decision to go with the gut, believing that the company could make tobacco grow in Yamasá, often tending to plants on an individual basis. That persistence paid off, first with the Davidoff Puro d’Oro, and then again in 2016 with the Davidoff Yamasá.
The black band doesn’t mean that this cigar completely sheds some of the characteristics of the Davidoff white label, but rather pushes it to the background by focusing on flavors of earth, oak and fruit, with sweet cereal notes and pepper adding to the cigar’s complexity, with citrus, hay, toast and more sweetness closing out the cigar.
With Davidoff Nicaragua seen as a win and Davidoff Escurio not so much, the Davidoff Yamasá gets the series back on track with a flavorful new entry into the series. — Patrick Lagreid.
