The Board of Directors of the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) has announced that Thomas Briant will be retiring from his position as NATO Executive Director, a change that will go into effect on or before Dec. 31, 2023.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of those NATO members that I have worked with over the years and who supported the association since it was formed in 2001, and I look forward to seeking new challenges in the industry,” Briant said in a press release.

Briant was instrumental in founding NATO 23 years ago and has grown the association to be a leading voice in the industry during his tenure with the organization.

The board has begun a search for the organization’s next executive director, with NATO board president Chris Beaulier serving as the contact person for the search.

NATO’s mission is to enhance the business interests of retailers that sell tobacco and nicotine products, as well as to support the legislative and regulatory interests of its members, and encourage the expansion of the retail tobacco and nicotine market in a responsible manner. NATO currently has 66,000 members.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
