Hurricane Ian

In Pinar del Río, Cuba’s main tobacco-growing region, just 7,700 hectares have been planted so far. That number amounts to barely half of what was planted in the region the year before Hurricane Ian hit the island.

With less than a week to go in an extended growing season, Cuba’s Pinar del Río growing region is on track to plant less than half of what it did in 2022.

Hurricane Ian made a direct hit in Cuba’s most prominent tobacco-growing region, Pinar del Río. Pictures from the Robaina family farm show serious damage.

Further north, American cigar companies in Tampa are closing Tuesday in preparation for the storm.
