South Portland, Maine Passes Flavored Tobacco Ban
The next hotspot for bans on the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine delivery products could be Maine, as on Tuesday night, South Portland passed its own ban and became the fourth city in the state to pass such a ban.
As it did during its first reading earlier this month, the South Portland City Council passed the second reading of the ban by a 5-2 vote. With its passage, the ban—which does not include any exemptions—will go into effect on April 1, 2023, with retailers facing a fine of $500 for a first violation and up to $2,500 for repeat violations.
South Portland joins Portland, Brunswick and Bangor in enacting bans on the sale of flavored tobacco products.
South Portland is home to approximately 27,000 residents.
