Scrim by HutcH Studio, which is based in Louisville, is celebrating the Kentucky Derby’s 150th running with a limited-edition cutter that pays tribute to one of the famous horse race.

The cutter uses an alternate ivory for its handles with scrimshaw art of three horses and the famous finish line of Churchill Downs. Those handles are attached to a XIKAR Xi2 Phantom body, known for its all-black body and blades.

The release of the cutter is also tied into Discount Smokes Louisville’s annual Derby City Cigar Bash, which is held around Derby Week. Rick Hutchings is also donating one of the cutters to Cigars for Warriors to raffle as a fundraiser.

Hutchings is producing only 25 cutters, each of which will come with a saddle leather pouch. Pricing is set at $400 per cutter; they can be ordered directly from Scrim by HutcH and will be produced on a one-by-one order basis.

The 150th Kentucky Derby will be run on Sunday, May 4.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
