The KENTRON #42K uses the latest developments in biomimetics, a process that draws its inspiration from nature, using the structures of biological systems to design practical materials. In this case, the company is 3D-printing the ashtrays in aluminum, with the name coming from the 42,000 elements used to create the KENTRON #42K.

“Ashtrays have become more and more devalued, a mere necessity for discarding the ash,” the company stated via a press release. “This is why we at RVGN Rauchvergnügen began engineering a new and entirely modern interpretation. Our aim was nothing less than to re-create the ashtray and its meaning – an exquisite place for the cigar, fostering intimacy and inspiration, and embodying a modernist lifestyle.”

RVGN Rauchvergnügenworked with CellCore, a company in Berlin, Germany that specializes in biomimetic engineering to create a lightweight backbone structure for the cigar hub that is similar to the veins of a tobacco leaf. The process to print the KENTRON #42K takes eight hours to complete, according to the company.

Production is being limited to just 100 units, each packaged in a hand-crafted wooden box made by a master cabinet maker in Munich, Germany that also serves as small desk humidor. It will be designed to look similar to that of the company’s grey cigar boxes, with customers able to personalize the box when ordering.

The company will have a prototype model on display at the 2019 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, which where the retail price for the KENTRON #42K will be announced. RVGN Rauchvergnügen dealers and lounges will each receive a limited reserved amount of the KENTRON #42K, with the first batch of shipments set to head out in August.

About the author

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for MLB.com, plus I'm a voice over artist. I previously covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
