The Room101 brand is expanding, this time into the hemp-derived cannabinoid market, better known as products sold under names like CBD, Delta-8 and Delta-9.

It’s called Room101 Canna, a name that obviously draws a connection with cannabis, i.e. marijuana. For now, the company won’t be selling cannabis, instead of focusing on hemp-derived cannabinoid products which are legal on a much wider basis.

Matt Booth, Room101’s founder, told halfwheel that the company is entering into the hemp-derived cannabinoid space, which he called “an opportunity to sell to 40 states with all of the emerging cannabinoids we are discovering every couple of months.”

Room101 Canna’s first product is a line of Delta 8 THC cartridges but according to Booth, the company will be releasing lines of edibles and preroll products shortly.

“As of now, it will only be with derivatives that have a standard for testing available: Delta-8, THCV, CBG and CBC,” said Booth. Currently, the company is not releasing any products marketed as THCO, THCP and HHC cannabinoids because he believes there are not yet uniform lab standards for these types of products. He said that Room101 Canna will look into them when standards are available and if it is determined that there is a benefit from those cannabinoids that others do not offer.

According to the FDA’s website, Delta-8 is “a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant, of which marijuana and hemp are two varieties.” Delta-8 is said to produce euphoric effects similar to those of THC, though generally in less intensity, which has led people to describe it as a middle ground between THC and CBD, which has been used as treatment for a variety of physical ailments but without the psychoactive effects. Given its relatively recent arrival in the market, it exists in a bit of a gray area as far as research done on its effects as well as its legality among the patchwork of laws that exist from state to state.

While the company is producing hemp-derived cannabinoid products, he opted to include Canna in the name of the brand so as to not limit itself to the hemp space, while also recognizing the potential opportunities that exist were legalization to occur.

“We are just scratching the surface of the cannabis space, and my intention is to impact this space in the same fashion we did the craft cigar space in 2009,” said Booth.

In addition to Room101 Canna and Room101 Cigars, the company also has a jewelry line and has released a line of gin.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
