At the Tobacco Plus Expo (TPE) 2020 trade show, Matt Booth of Room101 Cigars announced that The Big Payback Maduro line is getting a new vitola with a familiar name but an updated size.

Booth calls the new size “an engorged Papi Chulo,” meaning it is bigger than the 4 x 42 size that bore the name in previous iterations. Booth didn’t disclose the specific size, though one of the few samples that made it to the show revealed it to be about 4 3/8 inches long and a 50 ring gauge. Unfortunately, the bulk of the samples along with some other shipments disappeared after being signed for at the hotel at which Booth is staying.

It will become the fourth cigar in The Big Payback Maduro line:

  • Room101 The Big Payback Maduro Robusto (5 1/4 x 50)
  • Room101 The Big Payback Maduro Toro (6 x 54)
  • Room101 The Big Payback Maduro Gordo (6 x 60)
  • Room101 The Big Payback Maduro Papi Chulo (TBA)

He noted that it will also be joining a revamped version of The Big Payback Connecticut line, which is scheduled to debut at the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Convention & Trade Show this summer, as part of the plan to turn The Big Payback “into the three-headed dragon it was intended to be,” Booth said. As for pricing, he said it will maintain the value proposition of the line, likely right under the $6 mark, and should be arriving at retailers within three months.

More details are expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
