Last month, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled a proposal that would ban anyone born after Jan. 1, 2009 from ever purchasing tobacco in the United Kingdom. Crucially, he said that when it came time to vote, members of Parliament would be able to vote however they choose.
Now, some members from Sunak’s own party are allegedly pushing back on the plan unless cigars are exempt.
According to a report from The Sun, “a group of senior MPs” are pressuring the Department of Health to create an exemption for the sale of cigars. The Sun describes the number as a dozen. For context, there are 650 members of the House of Commons, 350 of which belong to the Conservative Party.
Currently, you must be at least 18-years-old to purchase tobacco products in the U.K.
