July 18, 2012 (Lansing, MI) — The House Commerce Committee passed Senate Bill 1004, the 50-cent cigar tax cap legislation, by a vote of 12-2, with four abstentions, and one member absent. The bill will next go to the House floor for a vote during the summer session. As the legislature is in limited session during the summer, we expect the legislation to be voted sometime between August and September.

Due to technical changes in the legislation (not germane to the tax cap language), the bill, once passed by the House, will go back to the Senate for another vote. We have no concerns on this second vote as the bill previously passed the Senate 35-1.
