9. Oscar Valladares McFly

If you’re currently listening to your favorite synthwave playlist and have a penchant for the Outrun aesthetic, slip on your Members Only jacket, slide on a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers (only at night, of course) and light up an Oscar Valladares McFly.

Everything about this release screams 1980s. The name McFly is of course referencing the main character of the hit 1985 film “Back to the Future.” The font is reminiscent of what you might see as your local video store logo or Saturday night cable TV movie intro. Lastly, the pink-purple-blue ombré background is the quintessential 80s color palette, which of course has to be overlaid with a Tron-style grid.

Oh, and did I mention holographic overlays? Yup, the McFly has that too.

Sure this isn’t an exquisite humidor finished with a spalted maple veneer, inlaid with mother of pearl accents and gold hardware. Maybe it does lean more towards the gimmicky side of our packaging awards, but who cares? It absolutely nails exactly what it’s going for, and here’s something that Marty himself would totally agree with: It’s just cool. — Brian Burt.
