Last November, voters in the town of New Castle approved an increase to the tobacco tax, adding a 40 percent tax on the wholesale price of other tobacco products as well as a $3.20 tax per pack of cigarettes that went into effect as of Jan. 1. Now, it might not be collected for the rest of the year.

According to a statement issued by the town, the reason for the suspension is that the revenue generated in January and February suggested that the town could surpass a cap of $65,000. The ballot measure approved by voters placed a cap on the amount of money that the town could collect from the tax, specifically $65,000.

As such, the city has directed tobacco retailers to stop collecting the tax, citing the difficulties in returning any excess funds collected.

However, the tax could return in 2021, as city officials have the ability to reinstate the tax prior to the end of 2020. Additionally, the town will not be subject to the $65,000 cap after this year.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
