Lefthand Cigar Co., a brand created by Ryan Rodriguez of Ohana Cigars, is releasing a new limited edition this week called High Maka Maka.

The cigar is a 6 x 52 toro that uses a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, a dual binder of Ecuadorian habano and tobacco from Nicaragua’s Jalapa region, and a Nicaraguan filler with tobacco from the Ometepe, Jalapa and Condega regions. The cigar is finished off by a fan cap, a differentiator from the pigtail style cap that Rodriguez usually uses.

The High Maka Maka comes with a new band design as well, as Rodriguez changed the logo to feature a pair of skeleton hands making the letters L and H. The original logo used when the brand launched in July 2018 depicted a cigar being held in a person’s left hand, but Rodriguez said that he received feedback on that initial logo that suggested a change might benefit the brand, so he came up with the new design.

High Maka Maka is made at TacaNicsa, the first time that Rodriguez has worked with the factory.

According to Rodriguez, the name means “pretentious” in Hawaiian, a name he chose because of the cigar’s price. With an MSRP of $15.99, it is one of the most expensive cigars created for either the Lefthand or Ohana brands. “I chose the best wrapper, binder and fillers I could,” Rodriguez told halfwheel,  adding that the binders and fillers were aged for between two and four years. Rodriguez said that it took him approximately a year to develop the project.

Rodriguez said that as of now, High Maka Maka will be a one-time release, with 5,000 cigars produced and offered in 20-count boxes. The cigars will debut Friday, Dec. 13, at UnderGround Cigar Shop in Fort Worth, Texas, and will then begin shipping to other retailers following the event.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
