Voters in Kearney, Mo. will decide whether or not a smoking ban is right for their city, as the city’s Board of Aldermen decided to put the matter on the Aug. 4 ballot during their meeting on Monday.
The proposal seeks to ban smoking in all enclosed places of employment and public places within the city, or within 10 feet of the primary entrance or exit of any of those places. The few exemptions would be for outdoor patios of bars and restaurants, up to 25% of hotel or motel rooms, and private residences that are not used as places of employment.
Violators would be subject to a $50 fine, while owners or operators of places where smoking is prohibited who allow smoking would be fined $100 for a first violation, $200 for a second violation and $500 for a third violation within a one-year period.
Kearney had a 2013 population estimate of 9,038 people. It is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Kansas City.
I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the G-League's Valley Suns, and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
