Hooten Young Cigars has begun shipping one of its new releases from the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, the Operation Gothic Serpent 30th Anniversary, a cigar it made in collaboration with Eladio Diaz.

The single-size release comes in a 6 1/4 x 54 belicoso vitola, with a blend that uses an Ecuadorian-grown Sumatra wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic. Diaz produces the cigar at his Tabacalera Diaz Cabrera factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

The cigar’s name recognizes the 30th anniversary of the 1993 U.S. military operation that sought to capture Mohamed Farrah Aidid, leader of the Somali National Alliance who was wanted for his attacks against United Nations troops.

It was also the operation that was featured in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down, and the name of the first cigar created by Hooten Young when retired Special Mission Unit Master Sergeant Norm Hooten & Tim Young launched their company. The two created the company in the winter of 2018 as a way to honor friends and family, and in particular, those who have served in the U.S. military. As such, the company donates 10 percent of all profits to charities that serve U.S. military veterans. In addition to cigars, the company also produces several lines of whiskey.

The Hooten Young Operation Gothic Serpent 30th Anniversary is a regular production release and will officially launch on Tuesday, Oct. 3, the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu, the mission that sought to capture two of Aidid’s lieutenants.

Pricing is set at $15 per cigar and $300 for a box of 20 cigars.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
