Garland, Texas has banned smoking in the city’s restaurants and most bars.

The ordinance, which passed 6-3, will exempt private clubs. Some bars are designated as private clubs as per the state’s liquor authority, which entitles them to different rules.

All businesses that serve food opened after a 2006 ordinance have been smoke-free. Yesterday’s action will mean that any of the grandfathered businesses now have to ban smoking as well.

Garland is an east Dallas suburb. It has a population around 225,000.
