Carlos & Maria Amorío, a brand new line from Freud Cigar Co. that it showed off at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, is set to begin shipping to retailers today.

When it arrives on store shelves, however, it won’t be immediately apparent that it is a Freud product, as there is none of Freud’s branding on the boxes or bands, which use a rather simplistic white and gold color scheme. The marketing materials that have been released don’t mention Freud, either, instead referring to Carlos & Maria as its own entity, noting that “Carlos & Maria Cigar Co. will release additional collections this year, blended by other notable names in the cigar industry.  A website that was included in the marketing materials is not yet active, and as of now, remains a parked page.

The first release, the Carlos & Maria Amorío, is a regular production line that is produced by Wiber Ventura at the El Maestro factory in the Dominican Republic. The blend features an Ecuadorian habano-seed wrapper, an Indonesia-grown Sumatra-seed binder, and a filler that contains Nicaraguan seco, Ecuadorian habano visos, Dominican San Vicente ligero, and criollo 98 visos of undisclosed origin.

It is offered in four sizes:

  • Carlos & Maria Amorío Corona Gorda (5 1/2 x 46) — $17 (Box of 10, $170)
  • Carlos & Maria Amorío Robusto (5 x 50) — $19 (Box of 10, $190)
  • Carlos & Maria Amorío Churchill (7 x 48) — $21 (Box of 10, $210)
  • Carlos & Maria Amorío Toro (6 x 54) — $23 (Box of 10, $230)

Freud Cigar Co. is distributed by Illusione from its Reno, Nev. warehouse.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
