Foundation Cigar Co. will be adding a new perfecto vitola to The Tabernacle line during the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show next month.

The Tabernacle Knight Commander is a 6 3/4 x 52 perfecto that is made up of the same blend as the previous Tabernacle releases: a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper covering a Mexican San Andrés binder and a combination of filler tobaccos from Honduras and Nicaragua. However, unlike the previous releases in the line that debuted during the 2016 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, the Knight Commander cigars were aged for an additional 15 months after being rolled.

According to a report from Cigar Aficionado, the Knight Commander will be priced at $40 each, or $480 for a 12-count box, with only 700 boxes available per year. The cigars are being produced at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. and are scheduled to begin shipping to retailers in the fall.

The press release also indicates that  Nicholas Melillo, Foundation’s owner, was inspired to name the cigar Knight Commander after the Ethiopian Crown Council awarded him the title of Knight Commander of The Ethiopian Star of Honor last March, an order of Knighthood that was established to honor both foreign and domestic people for their service to the country of Ethiopia.

In addition, Foundation will be donating all proceeds from the sales of Knight Commander cigars to Ethiopian charities in order to help with philanthropic initiatives like rebuilding churches and paying for scholarships.

I have worn many hats in my life up to this point: I started out as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, then transitioned to photographing weddings—both internationally and in the U.S.—for more than a decade. After realizing that there was a need for a cigar website containing better photographs and more in-depth information about each release, I founded my first cigar blog, SmokingStogie, in 2008. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars, and it was one of the predecessors to halfwheel, which I co-founded.
