A cigar inspired by an honorary title awarded to Foundation Cigar Co. founder Nicholas Melillo is now shipping to stores.

The Tabernacle Knight Commander is a 6 3/4 x 52 perfecto that is made up of the same blend as the previous The Tabernacle releases: a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper covering a Mexican San Andrés binder and a combination of filler tobaccos from Honduras and Nicaragua. However, unlike the previous releases in the line, the Knight Commander cigars were aged in cedar for an additional 15 months after being rolled.

According to a press release, Melillo was inspired to name a cigar Knight Commander after the Ethiopian Crown Council awarded him the title of Knight Commander of The Ethiopian Star of Honor, an order of Knighthood that was established to honor both foreign and domestic people for their service to the country of Ethiopia.

“Receiving the Ethiopian Star of Honor is an extraordinary privilege and an honor of a lifetime,” said Melillo in a press release. “The Knight Commander vitola is my tribute to this esteemed recognition, and I am proud that 100% of all wholesale proceeds will be contributed directly to charity, making a meaningful difference in the lives of Ethiopians.”

The Tabernacle Knight Commander is priced at $40 per cigar or $480 for a 12-count box, with only 700 boxes available annually during the fall. The cigars are being produced at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
