During the 2024 Total Product Expo (TPE) happening in Las Vegas this week, Esteban Carreras unveiled its newest line, called Soga de Oro.

The line uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper atop a Nicaraguan binder from Condega as well as Nicaraguan fillers from Estelí and Jalapa. The line’s name means rope of gold, which comes from the twist of tobacco that is used in place of a traditional band on the cigar, though the cigar also gets a foot band to help identify it.

It is being produced at Tabacalera Carreras in Nicaragua and is being offered in three vitolas:

  • Esteban Carreras Soga de Oro Boolit (4 3/4 x 46) — $9 (Box of 50, $450)
  • Esteban Carreras Soga de Oro Toro (5 3/4 x 54) — $12 (Box of 50, $600)
  • Esteban Carreras Soga de Oro Sixty (6 x 60) — $14 (Box of 50, $700)

In addition to the regular aging that the cigars go through after being rolled, Craig Cunningham told halfwheel that these cigars received an additional year of aging in their boxes before being released.

While the Soga de Oro line is a regular production addition, the number of cigars being produced every month is fairly limited. According to Cunningham, just 50 boxes of each size will be available per month and the first batch is shipping to retailers now.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
