Fans of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust who were hoping to get their hands on the new Polpetta line will have to wait until the new year, as the company has announced that the cigars won’t hit shelves until January.

“Normally delays from intended release dates are the result of either the cigars and/or the packaging not being ready, but this is not the case for Polpetta – the cigars are already landed and aging in our US warehouse,” said Steve Saka, founder of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust in a press release. “It is simply a matter of operational logistics and doing what we believe is in the best interest of our purveyors and my staff,” he added.

The Polpetta line debuted in late 2019 as an event-only cigar, but in June it was announced that it would become a regular production line. The cigar is a 4 x 48 vitola that uses a mixed filler cigar, meaning it has a wrapper and binder like a typical cigar, but the filler is smaller cuts of cigars instead of the long fillers that are used for a typical cigar. For Polpetta, the company uses the broadleaf cuts from the Mi Querida, Mi Querida Triqui Traca, Umbagog and Red Meat Lovers lines, along with two long-leaf fillers. A Mexican San Andrés binder and Connecticut broadleaf wrapper round out the blend, with the line produced at the Nicaragua American Cigars S.A. (NACSA) factory in Nicaragua.

“I am disappointed we can’t get these toothy, petite robustos out sooner because I think it makes a great choice for many hardcore cigar smokers for the winter months, but I have to be pragmatic and do what is right for our customers and my staff regardless of what my accountant and I want,” Saka said via a press release. He went on to say that the decision was made in consultation with his staff, who recognized that the StillWell Star Holiday 2023 release needs to go out in November due to its time-sensitive branding. “They felt they couldn’t evenly distribute another new puro simultaneously and fairly to all our retail partners. So, I have decided to delay our introduction of Polpetta until January,” Saka said.

When it is released, Polpetta will come with an MSRP of $7.25 per cigar, which the company says makes Polpetta its most budget-friendly release to date.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
