A bill has been introduced into the Colorado General Asssembly that would allow counties to create their own rules and regulations surrounding tobacco and nicotine product sales.
Senate Bill 24-022, which is sponsored by Sen. Kyle Mullica, D-Thornton, Rep. Elizabeth Velasco, D-New Castle, and Rep. Kyle Brown, D-Louisville, would allow counties in the state to regulate the distribution of cigarettes, tobacco products, or nicotine products, and to prohibit the distribution or sale of cigarettes, tobacco products, or nicotine products, including flavored cigarettes, flavored tobacco products, or flavored nicotine products.
The sponsors of the bill have said that this will allow counties to further restrict youth access to tobacco products, while also providing further clarification to HB19-1033, a 2019 piece of legislation that allowed local municipalities to pass laws regarding tobacco sales, but primarily focused on age restrictions.
The bill has not yet been referred to a committee for further action.
