The California State Senate approved Senate Bill 151 by a vote of 26-8 today, giving its approval to a proposal to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. The bill was introduced by state Sen. Ed Hernandez, D-22 in January.

The bill now heads to the State Assembly for its consideration.

California is the most populous state in the country, with a 2014 estimated population of 38.8 million people.
