After showing it off at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, Black Label Trading Co. has released an amped-up version of its Bishops Blend called Novemdiales.

The new line features a Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper, an Ecuadorian habano-seed binder, and a filler that includes tobacco from Nicaragua and Pennsylvania, as well as Connecticut broadleaf.

The blend is a departure from the original Bishops Blend, which debuted in 2016, and used an Ecuadorian-grown maduro wrapper.

“The result is a very rich, earthy, and intricate fusion of dark fruits, layers of spice, and a stout star anise finish,” said James Brown, creator of Black Label Trading Co. and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra, via a press release.

The three sizes in which the Bishops Blend Novemdiales are being released are also new for the Bishops Blend line:

  • Bishops Blend Novemdiales Petite Corona (4 1/2 x 46) — $10.50 (Box of 20, $210)
  • Bishops Blend Novemdiales Robusto (5 x 50) — $11 (Box of 20, $220)
  • Bishops Blend Novemdiales Toro (6 x 48) — $12 (Box of 20, $240)

Production is limited to 900 boxes of each size. As for the name, it comes from the Roman Catholic tradition that calls for an official nine-day mourning period following the death of a pope.

“Bishops Blend has been one of our most popular and sought-after releases,” Brown said. “This year, to help celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Black Label Trading Co., we felt compelled to create a special edition.”

The cigars are produced at Fabrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua and will begin shipping to stores this week.

Update — Shortly after this article was published, the company confirmed production numbers, which have been added to this story.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
