Since the Asylum brand celebrates its seventh anniversary, each year the company has released a limited edition offered in the same two sizes, albeit in a blend that can change each year. One interesting quirk has been that often the company has shown off the next year’s release to retailers during the annual PCA Convention & Trade Show. That meant last summer—when Asylum was celebrating its 11th anniversary—the brand showed off the Asylum 12, which is the 2024 release.

As it turns out, what was previewed for retailers isn’t exactly what’s coming to market.

While the color scheme remains the same as what was previewed—matte black with bright blue accents—there is one change. For every release up until the Asylum 12, the cigars have been individually packed in coffins. This year, the cigars will come in tubos, a first for the series. The prototype box that was shown off to retailers showed the cigars in coffins.

As for the blend, it is more or less undisclosed, though the binder is from a CLE-owned farm in an unnamed South American country. It will be offered in two sizes:

  • Asylum 12 11/18 (6 x 48/54/48) — $21.60 (Box of 20, $432)
  • Asylum 12 70 x 7 (7 x 70) — $26.60 (Box of 20, $532)

“I have always considered the Asylum brand as an almost experimental project in where I can play with all kinds of off-the-wall blends, vitola sizes, and unique packaging,” said Christian Eiroa, co-founder of Asylum, in a press release. “I strongly believe that we have hit the mark with the Asylum 12 2024.”

The Asylum 12 will be on display at this week’s 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas. The cigars are slated to ship in May or June. Production numbers have not been disclosed.
