Maine Senate Passes Minimum Tobacco Purchasing Age Increase
Yesterday, Maine’s Senate voted in favor of raising the state’s minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21. The proposal now moves to the House, where if approved, Maine could become the third state to raises its tobacco purchasing age to 21.
L.D. 1170 passed 31-4, a margin that is veto-proof, though the House still needs to approve the measure.
The bill was amended to allow anyone who is at least 18 as of July 2018 to buy tobacco products within the state.
California and Hawaii are the only two states that have passed similar laws, though a variety of states have active bills that would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco.
