At some point in every cigar smoker’s life, a clump of hot ash will drop in their lap, which can result in stained and possibly burnt clothes. A new product called Cigar Bibs from LuJo&Co Inc. aims to prevent those burn marks by giving cigar smokers a fire-proof piece of fabric to place in their laps.

“As an avid cigar smoker, I had a huge problem burning myself and ruining my clothes from not paying attention to the cigar ash during conversations and other distracting events like listening to music or even driving,” said Alphonso Brown, founder and ceo of LuJo&Co Inc. “After costly replacements of shirts, pants, and shorts in addition to a significantly higher dry-cleaning bill—I even dropped hot ashes on my leather car seats causing unpleasant damage—I had to find a solution to solve my highly inconvenient problem. I have also seen this happen to female cigar smokers with their dresses, skirts, and pants as well.”

Brown spent two years researching materials and designing prototypes that he felt achieved the perfect balance of usability, elegance, luxury and style in a fire-certified fabric.

“The Cigar Bibs provides peace of mind when enjoying a relaxing smoke,” Brown said in a press release. “You don’t have to worry about unexpected hot ashes falling on you, burning your skin, or damaging your clothes. The Cigar Bibs offers protection while doing it in style.”

The company is set to launch its Kickstarter campaign on May 2, and is offering supporters a way to get their own Cigar Bib at a discounted price of $281 as compared to the MSRP of $469. Cigar Bibs are available in four colors: black, blue, green, and burgundy. The company offers both a classic and contemporary font option, as well as the ability to add personalization for an additional fee, such as initials or Greek letters for fraternities, sororities and honor societies. The company also offers a cleaning kit that comes with a solution to restore the fire-retardant nature of the fabric, as well as a horsehair brush to clean the Cigar Bib.

Brown is expecting to have the Cigar Bibs ordered through the Kickstarter campaign available in mid-June.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
