Winchester, N.H. Voters Reject Tobacco Purchasing Age Increase
A petition warrant article on the recent Winchester, N.H. ballot seeking to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21-years-old was defeated by voters with a tally of 336-228.
The proposal began its journey to the ballot after not being approved by the Board of Selectman in February, failing by a 4-1 vote, but it did qualify to be a ballot question by way of a citizen-led petition campaign. Had it passed, Winchester would have joined Dover, Keene and Newmarket as cities in New Hampshire to enact such increases to the tobacco purchasing age. A bill to enact a statewide increase has also been introduced into the legislature.
Winchester is home to approximately 4,200 people and is located in the southwestern corner of the state.
