Beginning next year, smoking will be prohibited along the beachfront boardwalk of Wildwood, N.J. as on Wednesday the city’s board of commissioners approved a ban for the area.

The ban is similar to one passed by Ocean City in 2014, as it will prohibit smoking on the boardwalk itself as well as the ramps and stairs that lead to the structure. The ban comes out of a concern both for public health from secondhand smoke as well as for the structure itself, as city officials have said the potential for fire from stray cigarettes is considerable.

No fines for violators have yet been associated to the ban, though that could change in the future according to a report from the Press of Atlantic CityThe city will use the summer tourism period to educate residents and visitors of the upcoming ban, which will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

The ban is expected to grow next month, as the city of North Wildwood will vote on a ban for its portion of the boardwalk.

Wildwood is located on the southern tip of New Jersey, with a 2015 population estimate of 5,149 residents.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I'm a voice over artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
