Following similar efforts in New York City and Suffolk County, the County of Westchester will consider increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 19-years of age.

Legislator Catherine Borgia, the Democratic majority leader, has proposed the increase citing her desire to get tobacco products out of high schools. She specifically chose 19, as opposed to 21 as many others have done, to help increase the passage of the law.

It’s unclear when a formal vote on the matter might take place.

Westchester County is located just north of New York City. It has a population of just under one million.
