Drew Estate Creates Liga Privada Único Serie Papas Bravas for Europe

In recent months, the combination of large–some would say extreme—price increases and decreasing availability of Cuban cigars has given non-Cuban companies an inroad into new markets that are becoming increasingly more receptive to their products. About 25 percent of the companies I talked to during the 2024 PCA Convention & Trade Show told me they were either already sending products outside of the U.S. or were considering doing so in the future, and there is no doubt in my mind that that number will only increase.

Weller by Cohiba 2024, With Tobacco Aged in Weller Full Proof Bourbon Barrels, Coming This Month

Barrel-aging tobacco before it is rolled into cigars is certainly not a new concept, but considering the obvious marketing tie-ins that go along with the process, I am surprised that more cigar companies have not tried out the idea.  There have been three Weller by Cohiba blends released so far, but only two of those previous incarnations included tobacco aged in bourbon barrels. The incorporation of tobacco aged in Weller Full Proof bourbon barrels for this version is extremely interesting to me, and I look forward to seeing if the inclusion of that tobacco gives the cigar an obvious flavor profile that would otherwise be lacking.

CigarKings Releasing COY 24 Geniales Colorado at Intertabac 2024

I have always been a fan of unique marketing ideas, and basing the color scheme of a limited-edition release on the winner of Pantone’s color of the year certainly qualifies. I also find it interesting because I am willing to bet that not many people even know that Pantone awards a color of the year—I did not until last year—and it makes me look forward to seeing what the company comes up with for future releases.

I have been smoking cigars for over eight years. A documentary wedding photographer by trade, I spent seven years as a photojournalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. I started the cigar blog SmokingStogie in 2008 after realizing that there was a need for a cigar blog with better photographs and more in-depth information about each release. SmokingStogie quickly became one of the more influential cigar blogs on the internet, known for reviewing preproduction, prerelease, rare, extremely hard-to-find and expensive cigars. I am a co-founder of halfwheel and now serve as an editor for halfwheel.
