The University of Texas System, a group of 14 public universities and medical centers in Texas, will be tobacco-free by the end of this academic year.

While the policies will be slightly different between campuses, all schools will ban tobacco use on the grounds and in buildings of every facility associated with the university.

The UT System includes more than 228,000 students and an additional 100,000 faculty.

It includes:

  • The University of Texas at Austin
  • The University of Texas at Dallas
  • The University of Texas at El Paso
  • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley — Brownsville
  • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley —Edinburg
  • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley — Harlingen
  • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley — McAllen
  • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley — Rio Grande City
  • The University of Texas at San Antonio
  • The University of Texas at Tyler
  • The University of Texas of the Permian Basin
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
  • The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler
  • The University of Texas Medical Branch
  • The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

A bill was introduced last week that would ban tobacco use on all state-owned properties in Texas, including colleges and universities.
