As astute Tatuaje fans will notice, Pete Johnson has been digging into his portfolio for re-releases a good bit in recent years, and in a small number of cases, giving some blends a new spin. In the case of the Tatuaje T110, instead of just doing a re-release of the original cigar that was released in 2005 as an exclusive to R. Field Wine & Co. in Hawaii, Johnson introduced two additional wrapper options, a Connecticut broadleaf and an Ecuadorian Sumatra to accompany to the original T110’s Ecuadorian habano wrapper.

The T110’s backstory is rooted in the original release being both a very limited and a very strong cigar, though Johnson has confirmed that contrary to some beliefs, the blend is not made solely of ligero. In 2021 it returned in the three aforementioned wrapper options, and in the case of the Tatuaje T110 Capa Especial, which uses an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, the result was particularly good. The wrapper seems to soften the blend just a bit, and in doing so allows for a new level of complexity to emerge. It’s creamier and nuttier while still holding onto core notes of earth, meatiness and pepper, making it a rare combination of a full-flavored, full strength cigar that still manages to offer detailed, nuanced flavors, which is why it landed on this year’s Top 25 list. — Patrick Lagreid.
