Ever since Davidoff rebranded Camacho in 2013 the brand has made clear attempts at marketing itself alongside bourbon, which has exploded in popularity over the last decade. There have been cigars aged in barrels, cigars that use tobaccos aged in barrels and even Camacho cigars that use tobaccos aged in barrels that are made in the Dominican Republic, an ocean away from Camacho’s home in the Dominican Republic.

The Camacho Distillery Edition is a trio of Camacho’s core blends—Connecticut, Corojo and Ecuador—that all have at least one component aged in spent bourbon barrels for at least six months.

In the case of the Camacho Distillery Edition Corojo, it’s a Honduran puro that has two Honduran corojo ligero binders, one of which is aged in spent barrels while the other one isn’t. For my palate, the Distillery Edition Corojo largely tasted like a very good version of a regular Camacho Corojo with the exception of about 10 minutes when it tasted very different. The bourbon notes coated my palate in a manner reminiscent of fire-cured tobacco. However, this cigars seems to be the ideal middle ground for those wanting to taste the effects of barrel-aged tobacco, something that oftentimes isn’t obvious, but didn’t want to have to taste it for the whole cigar like a cigar with fire-cured tobacco. — Charlie Minato.
