If you’ve been following one of the ongoing and still developing stories in the cigar industry, it’s the rise of cigar of the month clubs in recent years. Retailers have had them for some time, but we have begun to see them proliferate in new ways and by independent companies such as Privada Cigar Club.

While Privada Cigar Club made its name as a cigar subscription service, the company has branched out into bringing its cigars to retail store shelves by way of the Limited Cigar Association, a way for Privada to sell some of the exclusive cigars it commissions for its club to other brick-and-mortar retailers. This cigar, one of the LCA’s releases, comes from Curivari’s Buenaventura line, though it is not the same blend as you might have smoked before. Rather, it’s close to it, but the Trail Mix uses higher primings of some of the original blend’s components but also uses some different tobaccos. The result is a flavorful and aromatic cigar, marked by campfire, black pepper, coffee, almonds in addition to the more expected earthy and woody notes. It’s a welcomed spin on the Buenaventura profile and a solid showing of what Curivari’s team can come up with when given the opportunity to show the company’s blending strengths. — Patrick Lagreid.
