Cigar manufactures draw inspiration from any number of places; in 2014, Crowned Heads debuted a series that is released each year to commemorate the people who have passed away.

Dubbed Las Calaveras, the series takes its moniker from a zinc etching by José Guadalupe Posada named La Calavera Catrina. The skulls—which are known as calaveras—have special meaning in Mexican culture as they are the symbol of Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday dedicated to those who have passed that is celebrated on Nov. 1-2.

Although the blends, number of cigars, vitolas and prices have changed year to year, one fact has remained constant: every one of the 30 Las Calaveras releases so far have been made at My Father Cigars S.A. This includes the newest incarnation, the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2021, which was offered in four different vitolas including the 6 1/4 x 40 Petit Lancero which is the thinnest Las Calaveras cigar to date and also the first to use a pigtail cap.

The Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2021 delivers not only complexity and harmony in the profile, but also an impressive richness to the flavors. In the end, while it did not place as high as its predecessors in 2014 and 2015, the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2021 LC50 is one of the mildest and most approachable releases in the history of the line. — Brooks Whittington.
