We’ve heard it time and time again, how things go all too quickly when they are enjoyable: a movie, a performance, a song, and yes, a cigar. But in the case of the La Flor Dominicana Petite La Volcada, the small vitola contributes a good amount to why time seems to fly.

The Petite La Volcada is the follow-up to the original La Flor Dominicana La Volcada, a 7 x 48 Churchill that was released in December 2017. The name is an homage to a dance that has roots in Uruguay, the country where Litto Gomez, La Flor Dominicana’s co-founder, grew up. For the follow-up to that beefy cigar, the company did what it did with La Nox, it went to the very small end of the vitola spectrum, releasing this 4 1/2 x 32 vitola. While the challenge of replicating, or even staying true to the blend of the bigger cigar would seemingly be a near impossible task, Gomez and La Flor Dominicana pulled it off with the smoothness and finesse that mark Litto’s dancing ability. — Patrick Lagreid.

While vitolas like these have all too often produced a flavor that is thin, dry and a pale imitation of the original, the La Flor Dominicana Petite La Volcada seems to atone for the sins of all the other similar vitolas that have come before it. It wastes no time delivering a medium-full profile that picks up an earthiness that manages to showcase both Mexican and Dominican terroir, while mixing in some sweetness while still delivering LFD’s signature strength. This little cigar far out punches its weight class and is a gem of a quick smoke.
