There is no shortage of cigars in the My Father Cigars portfolio, but there may not be a line with a more important backstory than La Promesa. As the company tells it, when José “Pepín” Garcia left Cuba for the United States, he is said to have made his family a promise that he would succeed, and this is the cigar dedicated to the promise.

The blend looks fairly familiar: an Ecuadorian habano oscuro wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler, but the results are anything but familiar. A distinctive sweet citrus note shines through in this size, an evolution that starts as strawberry and evolves to lemon and orange bitters, all while sitting atop an evolving base that mixes breads and creaminess with chocolate, sunflower seeds, nutmeg and coffee, among others.

This is one example where the lancero vitola really makes it shine, which is notable as there are few factories that have excelled at making the size as well as My Father Cigars S.A. It’s a distinctive blend in a distinctive vitola, and one that found flavor for delivering a very enjoyable smoking experience. — Patrick Lagreid.
