A proposal in Westchester County, N.Y. seeks to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21.

The measure was introduced earlier this week by seven Democratic members of the board of legislators and it was promptly sent to committee.

This is hardly the first time an age increase has been proposed in Westchester County, but previous attempts have failed. In 2014, the legislators unsuccessfully tried raising the age from 18 to 19 and last year a proposal was introduced to raise the age to 21.

Westchester County is located just north of New York City. It has a population of just under one million.
