As of today, you must be 20-years-old to purchase tobacco in Arlington, Mass. The first step of new purchasing age regulations goes into effect today, with the second half—requiring customers to be at least 21-year-olds to purchase tobacco—becoming law this time next July.

Arlington, joins a host of Massachusetts cities that have resisted the minimum purchasing age for tobacco. Over 20 municipalities have passed similar laws and a statewide proposal was introduced as an amendment to the Commonwealth’s 2015 budget.

The Middlesex County town is located in the eastern part of the state, roughly five miles northwest of Boston. It has a population over 40,000.
