Tatuaje The Wolfman Redux 4

Over the years, few cigar releases have commanded the combination of longevity and influence that Tatuaje’s Monster Series enjoys.

When it debuted in 2008 with The Frank—a cigar named after the Frankenstein character from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein—the series was supposed to only include 13 releases, each based on a different character from a horror novel or film. However, that changed in 2012 when Tatuaje released the Little Monsters sampler, a box made up of smaller cigars using the same blends as the first four Monster Series releases—The Frank, The Drac from 2009, The Face from 2010 and The Wolfman from 2011—as well as the next Monster that had yet to be released named The Mummy.

Eventually, there were 13 full-size Monsters added to the line, as well as seven different Monster Series samplers and two additional Advent Calendars that contained a variety of Monster Series cigars. The final two of the planned 13 original Monster Series cigars were released in 2019: The Chuck and The Tiff.

There was not a new full-size Monster Series cigar in 2020, but in 2021, Tatuaje rereleased that first cigar, The Frank, as part of a new Monster Series Redux spin-off series. According to Pete Johnson, founder of Tatuaje, the Redux cigars will be the same size and vitolas as the original versions, but the blends may not be exactly the same.

Over the years, I have made no secret of the fact that The Wolfman blend has long been one of my favorite creations in the Monster Series, and that trend continues with The Wolfman Redux 4. Compared to what I remember with the original cigar, there are some new aspects with this iteration, including the distinct red pepper on the retrohale and a floral note that showed up on the finish during the second half. In the end, while I have had mixed results from the past Monster Series Redux releases I have smoked, The Wolfman Redux 4 is exactly what I was hoping the series would give me.

Since the Redux cigars have been released in the same order as the original cigars, this year’s cigar is The Wolfman Redux 4, a 7 1/2 x 52 torpedo. Its name was inspired by the monster in the 1941 film “The Wolf Man,” which starred Lon Chaney Jr. in the title role. Like the original version of The Wolfman, The Wolfman Redux 4 features an uncovered foot and is made with an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper covering a binder and filler blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos.

As was the case with The Face Redux 3 last year, Tatuaje produced 5,000 boxes of 13 The Wolfman Redux 4 for a total of 65,000 cigars. However, there are three different box versions:

  • 666 boxes are numbered 1-666 and featuring different artwork than the standard, unnumbered boxes
  • 34 boxes are numbered XX, these will not be sold and are reserved for events and Tatuaje’s private use
  • 4,300 boxes are unnumbered (pictured above)

Pricing is set at $13 per cigar and $169 per box, regardless of whether the cigar box is numbered.

This is the eighth version of The Wolfman.

Editor’s Note: This is one of the rare cases when we are doing a redux review of a new version of a cigar and not of an aged sample of a cigar we have already reviewed. — Charlie Minato.

Visually, The Wolfman Redux 4 is an impressive specimen, with a brushed foot and a milk chocolate brown wrapper that, despite its lack of noticeable oil, is relatively smooth to the touch. However, there is no lack of mottling, and the cigar is nicely firm when squeezed. In addition, the combination of soft box-pressing and the uncovered foot are nice touches. Sweet cedar leads the aromas from the wrapper, followed by barnyard, dank earth, leather tack, light herbs and generic nuttiness. Notes from the uncovered foot are quite a bit more obvious, including creamy nuts, cornbread, cedar, dry hay, coffee beans and honey sweetness. After a Dickman cut, the cold draw brings flavors of peanut shells, straw, cedar, cocoa nibs, leather and a touch of cinnamon along with some light fudgy sweetness.

The cigar starts out with some impressive spice on my tongue combined with a large amount of bitter espresso flavor. It takes nine puffs for the burn line to reach the part of the cigar that is covered by the wrapper, and that is when the profile changes and the main flavors of creamy almonds and aromatic cedar. Secondary notes of plain oatmeal, gritty earth, creamy leather, coffee beans and light citrus show up at various points, while the retrohale features a distinct combination of maple syrup sweetness and red pepper, neither of which are dominant over the other so far. The flavor ends the first half at full, while the body hits a solid medium and the strength crosses into the medium-plus territory. There are no issues whatsoever with any aspect of the construction, as the burn line, great draw and copious smoke production are all working in harmony so far.

After the burn line passes the halfway point, a new floral note becomes noticeable on the finish of The Wolfman Redux 4 and it combines nicely with the new main flavors of plain popcorn and dried tea leaves. Additional flavors include creamy cedar, almonds, sourdough bread, dark chocolate, sawdust and light cinnamon. On the retrohale, the red pepper remains noticeable at about the same level, but the maple syrup note has morphed into a sweetness that reminds me of fresh orange juice. The flavor remains firmly at full, the strength increases to medium-full, and the body increases slightly to land at medium-plus. Finally, the burn line continues to be trouble-free, the draw gives me just the right amount of resistance, and the smoke production remains constant until I put the nub down after one hour and 57 minutes of smoking time.

Over the years, I have made no secret of the fact that The Wolfman blend has long been one of my favorite creations in the Monster Series, and that trend continues with The Wolfman Redux 4. Compared to what I remember with the original cigar, there are some new aspects with this iteration, including the distinct red pepper on the retrohale and a floral note that showed up on the finish during the second half. In the end, while I have had mixed results from the past Monster Series Redux releases I have smoked, The Wolfman Redux 4 is exactly what I was hoping the series would give me.
