As of Oct. 1, smoking in public parks and downtown public areas such as Clinton Square will be banned. The Common Council approved the measure 7-2. Fines will be $50, although it’s expected few will be issued.

The measure was brought forward by Councilors Khalid Bey and Bob Dougherty, who began investigating the possibility of a smoking ban in February. The ban does not create a smoke-free zone downtown as the Councilors had once planned.

Syracuse is located in Onondaga County, in central New York. It has a population around 150,000—a metropolitan area over 600,000—and is home to Syracuse University.
